ASK ERIK

ASK OR EMAIL US WITH YOUR WINE QUESTIONS. EACH NEWSLETTER WILL FEATURE A CUSTOMER'S QUERY...

Q. Do you think you will ever be switching to screw caps for wines made here?
p.stanton-kimberley
A. There are four main closures used for wine bottles. Those are...
-Real punched corks (prohibitively expensive and up to 10% spoilage reported)
-Agglomerated synthetic corks (cheaper, musty smelling and impart an off taste to the wine).
-Synthetic corks (medium-high price, extremely dependable and impart no off taste so we use them here).
-Screw caps (now called Stelvin Closures, extremely simple and dependable and effective, but lack the cork pulling experience).
Currently synthetic corks are the best combination of cost and value for our
use here. If we were to switch to Stelvin closures all the bottles our current customers use would become obsolete. This would run contrary to our mission to help our customers enjoy the best possible wines at the best price, so we don't forsee a switch to Stelvin closures (screw caps) in the foreseeable future. Eric.
